Frequently asked questions....
How do I know if I need Chiropractic Care?
It's almost as accurate to say "do I need to be healthy?" By Brushing your teeth you prevent tooth decay but visit your dentist every so often for a check up. By stretching, eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, and receiving a periodic Chiropractic alignment you can help your body prevent arthritis and function at an optimal level. If you suffer from any of the following symptoms you may be a candidate for Chiropractic care.
- Low back pain
- Whiplash
- Neck pain
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Leg pain (sciatica)
- Bulging or herniated disc
- Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
- Sports injuries
- Restless leg syndrome
- Headaches
- Heartburn (acid reflux)
- Constipation
What is Chiropractic and How does it work?
Chiropractic is a treatment system that looks at the CAUSE of a problem, not the EFFECT OR SYMPTOMS of a problem.
One of the biggest and busiest information inputs into the nervous system is the proprioceptive system. That is a big word for knowing where the body's parts are in space. Just try touching your finger to your nose while your eyes are closed, even with your head moving at the same time. No problem! Now try touching someone else's moving nose with your eyes closed. Major problems! If anything is important for survival it is being able to control your movements and move about. The proprioceptive system gets its information from mechanoreceptors (specialized nerve endings) from joints and the surrounding tissues. If certain joints or tissues are injured and heal improperly the biomechanics are distorted, causing the nerve receptors to send out distorted and conflicting information to the nervous system.
If we stand with our feet together and put one arm straight out to the side-it's no big deal. Do the same thing to a clothing store manikin and it falls over. When we put our arm out we don't just move the muscles that lift our arm. We make thousands of changes to shift our balance just the right amount, stabilize the spine, shoulder girdle, and head, plus we signal the blood supply to increase for the new muscles that are now working harder, we increase the heart rate and maybe breathe harder and start to sweat. The nervous system is so amazingly complex.
Now if you distort some of that information going to the brain, you make the brain make mistakes. These mistakes not only concern the area where the distortion came from, but they also can cause mistakes in the heart, lungs, digestive track, and all the other organs.
The most important tissues that cause the biggest problems after being injured are those around the vertebrae of the spine, because the spine has to constantly adapt to every little change of body position and ground surface. The spinal joints have many more nerve endings around them than the extremity joints do, because the body knows they are more important.
This is why chiropractic care often has dramatic results with colic and other digestive problems, cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic and many other problems.
How much does Chiropractic Care cost?
Chiropractic care is covered by most insurance plans. Dr. Hay is credentialed and in network with most insurance companies such as Anthem, Humana, United Health Care, Aetna, and Medicaid to name a few. If your company isn't on this list just call and one of our assistants will be happy to call and confirm that you have coverage. Your cost is based on what your insurance plan dictates.
There is usually no out of pocket expense if you are seeking care due to an automobile accident or a work related accident.
Our office also offers affordable cash plans for those without insurance coverage or who aren't in our insurance network.
What can I expect on my first visit?
Upon your first visit Dr. Hay will perform a full examination on you. This will include a history of your health, physical examination including orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic exams. X-rays are taken if necessary. All of this information is compiled to evaluate your problem and to dictate the appropriate care.
What is that "cracking" sound?
The cracking sound that is sometimes heard with an adjustment is simply air and fluid that is shifted in the joint when motion is introduced to the joint. A good comparison is when a bottle of champagne is opened and you hear a "pop". You don't always hear that sound during a treatment and it's presence is irrelevant.
What education is required to be a Chiropractor?
The required education is very similar to a medical school curriculum. After an undergraduate degree is obtained, an intense four year Chiropractic school begins. This includes over 350 hours of basic and clinical sciences along with continued internships. The completion of 4 board exams governed by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners is required along with state licensing board completion.
Are Chiropractors against medicine, surgery, or vaccinations?
Absolutely not. There is a time and place for all of these forms of care. If your problem is outside of our scope of practice, we will refer you to the appropriate office for further evaluation. Our office believes in patient education. This means we like to give you the facts and let you make informed decisions on which direction to steer your healthcare.
Why do newborns and children get adjustments?
Babies and children grow quickly, and their muscles, ligaments, and bones develop rapidly. A jump, tumble, or fall can jar the body, affect the spine (and possibly the nervous system), and then go undetected for years. Even simple factors, such as a heavy backpack or an ill-fitting car seat, can have negative effects on a child's health.
Considering these factors, it's evident that babies and children can benefit greatly from chiropractic care. Regular spinal exams can provide corrective and preventive care for "little ones," as well as peace of mind for the parent.
Parents of small children also have much to gain. We can offer advice regarding how to pick up and carry a child and, for post-partum mothers, an assessment of any structural changes that may have occurred during pregnancy, labor, and/or delivery.
Colic, ear infections, range of motion, and sleeping inconsistencies are some of the many problems we see that respond very favorably to chiropractic care. Pediatric adjustments are gentle. Knowing exactly where to adjust, the doctor applies no more pressure than to test a tomato's ripeness.
Teenagers' bodies are also growing at a rapid rate. This, combined with the fact that teenagers often think they are invincible, sets them up for a wide range of physical problems.
Chiropractors understand the effects of aging and have been helping people deal with the aches and pains associated with aging for decades. As with other patients, we diagnose the ailment, determine what's causing it, and then choose from a variety of gentle therapeutic techniques to alleviate it.
If you would like to have Dr. Hay evaluate your child's spine and posture just call our office at 859-581-1010 to set an appointment.
Can I have chiropractic care after back surgery?
Yes. Once an area of your spine has been surgically altered, the normal stress applied to the altered joint is dispersed to the surrounding joints; its your body.s way of compensating. Chiropractic alignments can prevent or delay any further wear and tear of those surrounding joints. The doctor will avoid the surgically altered area and focus treatment on the nearby unstable areas. Each patient.s condition is unique; therefore, Dr. Hay will evaluate and discuss if chiropractic care would be beneficial in each particular case.
